I injured a shoulder playing wheelchair rugby. I needed treatment but ACC turned down the surgeon’s recommendation.
I appealed this decision but the mediation meeting was booked in a motel room that was not wheelchair friendly. There were two steps to get into the room! I couldn’t have accessed that room at the best of times, let alone with an injured shoulder, which I wouldn’t risk damaging further having someone lift me up those two steps.
An accessibility act should ensure that all mediation is carried out in places accessible to those involved in the mediation, without us needing to advocate for such.
This is my access story, it is one of many. I'm sharing it because I want a law that puts accessibility at the heart of an inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
