Taxi Confidence - Jonathan's Story

Jonathan is autistic and often uses taxis. With the support of local total mobility representatives he recently approached the taxi companies where he lives requesting that he can nominate a driver of his choice.

Jonathan has several taxi drivers he feels safe with and who know where he lives. Working with the companies to rectify this has been a difficult process and is still in the discussion stage. One particular taxi company is resisting devising a policy regarding nominated drivers. Other autistic people have expressed support for the implementation of this policy.

Accessibility legislation and transport standards could ensure that this safety option would be available to all disabled taxi users.

This is my access story, it is one of many. I'm sharing it because I want a law that puts accessibility at the heart of an inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
